Biochem/physiol Actions
PGs mediate vasodilation and vasoconstriction.
General description
Prostaglandins (PGs) belong to the group of biological compounds called eicosanoids, which are oxygen derivatives formed during arachidonic acid metabolism. PGs are localized to every tissue and body fluids in the mammals. PGs contain prostanoic acid and are divided as PGA, PGB, PGC, PGD, PGE and PGF groups. They all contain a five-member ring structure differing in their functions. PGF is known to be more soluble in phosphate buffer.
